Bambusa fecunda *New

From China, this well-traveled clone of Bambusa fecunda was first sent from Taiwan to northern Thailand. It was then sent to the USDA for quarantine, was released in 2018, and is now test growing at Tropical Bamboo Nursery.
Per taxonomist Dieter Ohrnberger, it seems to be similar to Bambusa boniopsis; the latter considered synonymous by the Flora of China. However, Bambusa fecunda has culm sheaths without auricles, or with inconspicuous auricles, whereas in B. boniopsis the auricles are quite large.
We're growing the species adjacent to Bambusa boniopsis to confirm that they are two different species, as expected.
Should grow to 25' tall, 1" diameter culms in Florida
Minimum USDA zone: 9b.

Bambusa guangxiensis - Chinese Dwarf Bamboo

Very dense and bushy. Perfect for creating a dense hedge, ideally trimmed up to 8' in height. It can easily be kept to a lower height by trimming the tops. Untrimmed, it should reach 25'+ tall. Creates a fantastic hedge to block out the neighbors or unsightly fence! Also works well in containers, as a patio plant. This bamboo has become a high-demand hedge plant in Australia. We expect the same in the sub-tropical areas of the USA.
Its native habitat is lowland valleys of Guangxi province southern China. These are set amongst Karst Mountains with deep gorges.
New import.
Min. temp reports vary, most between 24-28F - it seems to be a true tropical to us and would likely suffer at temps below freezing. Min USDA zone: 9a.Click here to find zone

Bambusa lako Inversa - Timor Green Bamboo

This bamboo is a natural mutation of Bambusa lako that occurred in our propagation fields. The standard Bambusa lako grows new culms that begin green then transition to black over about a six month period. Small vertical green stripes often remain on the black culms.
In 2015, a single specimen began producing the opposite color pattern - the culms remained green but black vertical stripes were left on most culms. This is an unusual and exciting feature that would stand out in any garden.
We isolated the inverted bamboo and monitored it for two years to ensure that it's unusual characteristic would br stable. Propagation began in 2018 and we're now have 3 gallon and 7 gallon sizes available.

Bambusa malingensis - Maling or Seabreeze Bamboo

The culms are straight and form tight, dense clumps. This is a medium sized bamboo that grows quickly to create a nice screen. Small leaves and thick-walled culms help make it one of the most storm tolerant of the tropical bamboos. Some claim that it's more salt tolerant than most bamboos - it certainly is the best choice if exposed to coastal winds. 35' tall and 2" dia. culms. Min. temp 20F. Min USDA zone 9a. Bambusa membranacea var. Variegata *New

Another wild-collected seedling that was discovered in NE Thailand in 2015 by Thoop Nakasan of Nan, Thailand. The species (B.membranacea) was in a flowering cycle in Thailand around 2009-2012 and most of the resultant seedlings have developed true to form. Some rare mutations are being discovered and this is one of the more spectacular.
Imported in 2016. It's now growing in our test field and propagation has begun.
Unlike the 'Waterfall' cultivar, this cultivar grows in the typical, upright form of Bambusa membranacea (but still smaller overall). The leaves are tiny and variegated green with cream-colored stripes.
It should be an ideal focal point in small gardens or feature bamboo in the foreground of large gardens.
So far, it looks to max out at 16' tall with 1/2" diameter culms. We'll update these specs as it continues to develop in the growing conditions of south Florida. Min temp, 25 deg F. Min USDA zone: 9a. Click here to find zone

Bambusa membranacea var. Waterfall *New

One of the wild-collected seedlings that was discovered in NE Thailand in 2015 by Thoop Nakasan of Nan, Thailand. The species (B.membranacea) was in a flowering cycle in Thailand around 2009-2012 and most of the resultant seedlings have developed true to form. Some rare mutations are being discovered and this is one of the more spectacular.
We imported it in 2015 and it took nearly three years to clear USDA quarantine. It's now growing in our test field and propagation has begun. The leaves are brilliantly variegated mostly white with thin green stripes. New shoots are purple/pink.
It grows in a bush form with cascading large leaves, never reaching even 1/4 the height of the standard B.membranacea. It should be an ideal focal point in small gardens or feature bamboo in the foreground of large gardens.
So far, it looks to max out at 10' tall with 1/2" diameter culms. We'll update these specs as it continues to develop in the growing conditions of south Florida. Min temp, 25 deg F. Min USDA zone: 9a. Click here to find zone
